Hallowed Ground

Hallowed Ground, part of the Sycamore Series including Ascension, was created.in response to a collaboration with three-year-olds at The Early Childhood Learning Center in Columbus Ohio in 2013. I had the privilege to work with these small people, collecting, exploring, and building a language to express themselves in a safe environment. Of course, we began outside in the ravines and forests. Discovering the hollowed-out base of a giant sycamore, they all crawled in and out and around this sacred monument, inspiring me to create an installation that would offer a hint of that innocent and breathtaking experience. Encasing the cascading sycamore bark in sheer fabric gave the installation an indestructible environment that invited you to pass through or linger within the two nested sides and feel surrounded by the ghost of that giant sycamore. It felt like sacred space.
